Compliance Courses : To assist employees to understand the federal, state, and/or college policies to which they are held accountable, Edmonds Community College has designated several trainings as mandatory for all permanent/regular college employees. These trainings include: State Ethics, Sexual Harassment Prevention, Diversity Basics, FERPA, and in some cases, CPR/ First Aid. The Workplace Civility and Respect Policy is also included.   As the training arm of the Human Resources Division, ODET coordinates the trainings and tracks participation. Employees must renew their training every 3 years. All compliance training is currently delivered online, except CPR/1st Aid.

Diversity Initiative: By respecting and appreciating all forms of diversity, Edmonds C.C. becomes a healthy, effective workplace that actively promotes inclusivity, collaboration and social justice among employees and within the community at large. ODET partners with groups throughout the campus that share this vision. Examples of recent partnerships include: co-sponsoring Undoing Racism 2-Day Workshop; campus wide trainings such as Multicultural Communication and Multicultural Conflict Resolution; and participation on the Diversity Council, Teaching & Learning Committee, and Arts Culture & Civic Engagement Committee. Leading to Succeed: ODET in partnership with Human Resources developed a professional development certification program called Leading to Succeed as a way to support Edmonds Community College supervisors in their effort to manage and lead employees. This comprehensive initiative offers supervisors a means to gain new skills and/or strengthen existing ones as well as build a supportive network with peers campus-wide. The program includes management and leadership skill building through SkillSoft Online courses and guest presenters, college-specific training through Human Resources Department, collegial and organizational support through facilitated discussions, and practical application through worksite-specific team projects. Team Initiatives: For professional development activities to be a vital and effective training and development must be directly linked to helping individuals and workgroups meet specific strategic goals. ODET has devised Team Initiatives as a method for providing department driven, multi-pronged workplace learning that focuses on the enhancement of individual effectiveness and work group performance related to Edmonds Community College’s strategic mission and goals. This is organizational development one team at a time. Click here for more information

Community Building Events: Throughout the year ODET offers community building opportunities for employees to meet peers and develop cross-campus relationships. Studies have shown that if an employee feels positively connected to the workplace community, her/his moral, motivation and general job satisfaction greatly improves. These, in turn, directly affect employee retention and job effectiveness. Each year ODET coordinates the following community building events: Building Community Day, Summer Professional Development Institute, Winter Professional Development Institute, The Great Spring Retreat, Crafting our Community, and Fall Kick Off Events.

Employee Recognition:  Another aspect important to increasing employee satisfaction, moral and effectiveness is employee recognition. A great college such as ours earns kudos through the efforts of each and every employee. But we must acknowledge the extra step, the special attention, the super effort, to continue the sparks that provide the best in student service and educational delivery. The ODET employee recognition program seeks to reinforce the importance of praise, thanks, and appreciation. The following awards are given throughout the year: BRAVO Awards (Quarterly) and Shining Star Award (Winter Institute).

Individual Development Plan (IDP): Edmonds Community College is committed to the development of all employees. Professional Exempt and Classified Staff have IDP forms available for use in planning their professional development. An IDP offers a tool to: 1) analyze your own development needs, set specific short and long term goals and decide which training opportunities best meet those goals, and 2) help you and your supervisor complete your annual Employee Performance Appraisal. Once your IDP is on file in the ODET office, it should be reviewed and updated as part of your annual evaluation process. Having an IDP on file with ODET has the added benefit of permitting you to apply for funding for outside professional development. If you need assistance filling out your form, please contact Chris Hudyma. For an IDP form click here

Professional Development Funds: In order to promote and encourage employee training and development, Edmonds Community College has budgeted funds to help support the professional development goals of its employees. The ODET Department facilitates the process by which employees may apply for funding. Classified & Professional/Exempt Staff Development (CSD & PESD) and Individual Development Plan (IDP) funding is available for individual grants totaling up to $500 per person per fiscal year until funds are expended. CSD, PESD and IDP funding is intended to support employees’ professional training and development goals as stated in their IDP. Funding may also be available for projects that demonstrate the potential for increasing effectiveness of college processes.

Employee Wellness: This program’s purpose is to provide all college employees with opportunities to increase their health and well-being. Studies have shown that healthy employees reduce organizational costs relating to absenteeism, worker compensation expenses and turnover (including costs related to terminating, vacancy, hiring, and training). Each year our program offers a variety of workplace wellness activities ranging from stress management and work/life balance to yoga and massage. Wellness classes are often included in the various community building events held throughout the year such as Building Community Day, Winter Institute and the Great Spring Retreat.
